Since no one has ever seen the Ilin Island cloudrunner alive in its native habitat, it is difficult to say what factors led to its extinction. Cloudrunners live in the trees of the cloud forests in the Philippines, so the destruction of forests may have led to the population decline. Many people report seeing the Ilin Island cloudrunner, but no confirmed sightings have been found. In 2019, a survey of the areas was conducted with no conclusive evidence. The fact that no one knows exactly what portion on Ilin Island this cloudrunner lived in, makes searching for it difficult. The date of its discovery in a marketplace, also marks its unofficial extinction date April 4, 1953. Could the Ilin Island cloudrunner live on Ilin Island in the Philippines today? Although Jurassic Park is fiction, scientists are working on several de-extinction projects. In fact, in 2003 scientists did bring back the extinct Pyrenean ibex, a type of wild goat, for 7 minutes before it died, showing de-extinction is possible. The Ilin Island cloudrunner might be a possible candidate. Scientists would potentially use DNA from the 1 and only museum specimen in D.C. to use to try to bring them back to life. Mining and logging continue to impose a great threat to the native wildlife of the Philippine islands. In fact the rediscovery of the once assumed extinct Dinagat bushy-tailed cloud rat in 2012, allowed locals to begin protecting the Dinagat watershed. Until the Dinagat cloud rat was found, the area was not protected. This would be a hurdle for the cloudrunner to return to Ilin Island where much of its original territory is under threat from mining and deforestation. If the Ilin Island cloudrunner was rediscovered or returned to Ilin Island, the local governments could begin stopping logging and protecting its home range. This would help other threatened or endangered species native to the Philippines. In some areas, they are the most commonly hunted species, and hundreds of animals are estimated to be killed annually. The Wildlife Protection and Conservation Law of 2001 was passed to make hunting or possession of wildlife in the Philippines illegal, but enforcing the law has been a problem. It's hard to say if an Ilin Island cloudrunner would be able to survive under current circumstances in its old cloud forest habitat.
